"Bel Canto Course" programme for 2011.

"Bel canto" and similar constructions ("bellezze del canto"/"bell’arte del canto") not only refer to the 18th and 19th century style of Italian opera whose greatest exponents are composers such as Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini but have a more profound, purer significance; literally it is the art of "beautiful singing"

The
Bel Canto Course is a four week opera workshop which offers the singing student a unique opportunity to practice and perfect the principles of the "bel canto" style while learning to master the Italian language in the magnificent city where it originally developed. Individual attention from personal vocal and diction coaching by the singing teacher and the language faculty will enable the young artists to absorb the purity and clarity of Italian diction, further enhanced through the study of the lyrics in the arias prepared by the students during the individual singing lessons and the performance and opera appreciation workshops.

These master classes will encompass the study of vocal technique (which aims at freeing the voice to obtain optimal breath control and vocal potential), performance styles and traditions, ornamentation, legato and expressive phrasing, listening to recordings of the legendary singers of the past and present, individual research and the development of analytical and listening skills

Students, from school age to aspiring professionals will work at their own level, and encounter a treasure of knowledge, experience, and discover the lineage to the "real" art of beautiful singing which will help the young artists of the future maintain the bel canto lyrical style and tradition alive in the 21st century.

The singing classes will be taught by Sarina Rausa, a professional opera singer and teacher of Italian-Australian descent who has been living in Italy for over 20 years. Sarina has collaborated (as a soloist in Italy and abroad as well as a member of various ensembles) with the greatest singers and directors of our day and for over 11 years at the Florence opera theatre the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and collaborates with the staff at the Conservatorio Cherubini in Florence.
